Symptoms

Diagnosis

- Antispasmodics: mebeverine, peppermint oil.
- Loperamide for diarrhoea-predominant.
- Laxatives for constipation-predominant.
- Low-dose tricyclic (amitriptyline) for pain.
- SSRI for those with anxiety overlap.
- Gut-directed CBT and hypnotherapy.
Red flags — when to seek urgent help
Call 999 or go to A&E if you experience any of the following:
- Blood in stool
- Unintentional weight loss
- Onset over age 50
- Family history of bowel cancer
- Nocturnal symptoms waking from sleep
- Anaemia
